Once the card is received (the stamps have to be uncalled when received), it is used to balance their outstanding account. Once the process has been completed, the card will be kept for a period of time and then securely destroyed. In fact today if there is an additional payment due the PO deliver a nice form stating they have the letter, what it will cost to release it and where you have to go to collect it.
